Being relatively new to cycling and a bit of a hill novice I felt that I had to start getting used to climbing. I’ve also signed up to do the London to Brighton ride in September and my goal is to complete this is in under 4 hours and to climb Ditching Beacon. Colliery Way is my closest climb and I did this on a calm sunny Sunday morning. There is a good, wide cycle lane for the entire length of colliery way. There are two main climbs - at the start and the end - which were pretty similar in length and gradient. I followed the advice I’d read and started steadily - keeping a steady pace and although I found it quite tough, I was able to complete the whole climb (which has a couple of downhill sections) in a shade over 14 minutes. I’ll be back regularly over the summer - the view from the top is pretty good.
