Took it today on the way to the Barrage Emosson (parked just outside Chamonix). The descriptions of the other experience are useful and correct.
Bear in mind that you will have to face 3 climbs and then the Col des Montets from Barberine is one that counts. You can then easily reach 22 climbing kilometres.
You can consider the Col de Montets to 'skipping' by either the car in Le Chatelard Frontiere to put or the train to go (Euro 9.70 normal, Euro 5 promotion and the Euro 10 for the bike (reservation!)).
Not great this climb. From a stats point of view, it's really easy and not really a challenge, but it's just loaded with traffic. Everything from speeding holiday-goers to massive trucks with building materials. Without the traffic, this would be a lovely climb, but if you're keen to get over the border to do a few of the Swiss climbs, you have to do this Montets one.
Despite not being the best, it is worth it to get over and do Barrage d'Emosson, and also experience the descent back into Chamonix - that is pretty special with the mountains as your constant view.
Busy road from Chamonix towards the Switzerland, not recommended. Although the road surface is more than fine, one can consider this route as a necessary evil to reach other climbs. Also pay attention to zebra crossings in Argentière and Chamonix.
I rode this Col on my way from Servoz to Barrage d'Emosson. The last 3 kilometres are nice, a few hairpins and some views, but before that it is a nasty piece to cycle. A boring and very busy road, so constantly watch out for cars.
Busy road until Argentière, then you have two nice hairpin bends.
This "col" has nothing special but you have to cross it if you want to leave Chamonix towards Switzerland (e.g. to climb the very nice barrage d'Emosson).
