I finally climbed the Col de la Chaudière from Saillans. In winter... In short, snow, wind. But it was beautiful. I said to myself as I climbed that you can say that you have made a pass when you have also climbed it in winter.
I prefer the climb from Bourdeaux. It is more open and the views are more striking.
In both cases, the route is good. I like this pass and the crossing of this syncline. Yes, definitely worth doing.
J’ai enfin grimpé le col de la Chaudière depuis Saillans. En hiver… Bref, de la neige, du vent. Mais, c’était beau. Je me disais en grimpant que l’on peut dire que l’on a fait un col quand on l’a aussi gravi en hiver.
Je préfère l’ascension depuis Bourdeaux. C’est plus ouvert et de fait les vues sont plus saisissantes.
Dans les deux cas, la route est bonne. J’aime ce col et la traversée de ce synclinal. Oui, à faire, sans aucun doute.
Today I finally did the col de la Chaudiere from Saillans by bike. After having climbed this col 4 times from Bourdeaux, it is finally on my resume of climbs. Actually, from Saillans, it is a bit of a copy from Bourdeaux with the difference that from Saillans, you are immediately confronted with a few kms at 7 and 9 ％. The middle section is equally quiet with 2 km at 5％ but with some steep short sections in it. The last 4 km are then tougher with some irregular percentages and some tougher inner bends.
The sun is of course a killer in this period and I had first climbed this col from Bourdeaux.
Definitely recommended if you are in the area and no gravel so the descent on this side is faster by bike than by car. Good advice: take enough drinks with you and best of all lots of ice cubes in your drinks cans.
Vandaag eindelijk de col de la Chaudiere vanuit Saillans met de fiets gedaan. Na 4 keer vanuit Bourdeaux deze col beklommen te hebben staat hij eindelijk op mijn cv met beklimmingen. Eigenlijk is het uit Saillans een beetje een copie vanuit Bourdeaux met dit verschil dat je vanuit Saillans onmiddellijk met de neus op de feiten wordt gedrukt met enkele kms aan 7 en 9 ％. Het middenstuk is even rustig met 2 km aan 5％ maar met enkele steile korte stukjes in. De laatste 4 km zijn dan zwaarder door wat onregelmatige percentages en enkele zwaardere binnenbochten.
De zon is natuurlijk een killer in deze periode en ik had eerst vanuit Bourdeaux deze col beklommen.
Zeker een aanrader als je in de buurt bent en geen grind waardoor de afdaling langs deze kant met de fiets sneller gaat dan met de auto. Goede raad : neem voldoende drank mee en best veel ijsblokjes in je drinkbussen.
I have ridden this col several times in recent years. Very difficult but very satisfying when you get to the top. In the last 3 kilometres, there is a tricky part of 11％. This year, it is back on the agenda. Be sure to go early.
Ik heb deze col de laatste jaren verschillende keren gereden. Erg lastig maar wel een grote voldoening als je boven bent. In de laatste 3 kilometer zit een lastig stuk van 11％. Ook dit jaar staat hij weer op de agenda. Ga vooral vroeg.

Eerst vanuit Bourdeaux want we zitten op camping le couspeau en dan bergaf naar Saillainz en fab nog col de Pertuis richting camping. Ik vermoed 1700 hoogtemeters met de mountainbike

Today I climbed this climb 2x from the south side (saillans). Nice climb. Little traffic. Asphalt on this side is fine. Unlike the north side from Bourdeaux, there is much loose gravel, especially in the descent is dangerous.
From Saillans beautiful climb. Bit irregular. Parts of 11-13pct are followed by parts of 3-4 pct. All in all a nice climb.
Vandaag deze klim 2x vanaf de zuidkant (saillans) beklommen. Mooie klim. Weinig verkeer. Asfalt aan deze kant is prima. In tegenstelling tot de noordkant vanuit Bourdeaux, daar ligt veel Los grind, wat zeker in de afdaling gevaarlijk is.
Vanuit Saillans prachtige klim. Beetje onregelmatig. Stukken van 11-13pct worden opgevolgd door stukken van 3-4 pct. Al met al een leuke klim.
Hey Niels , I climbed the col de la Chaudiere 3 times in July 2020 from Bourdeaux and at the top, the 3rd time I met a pro from South America and he also told me that from Saillans, there were some quite steep parts in it of more than 10％ and it was also harder from Saillans ( also more altimeters , 770 versus 647 ). But it is a beautiful area for cycling. This year, if corona allows it, I'm going to cycle in the area around Sahune and apparently even more beautiful surroundings than around Bourdeaux and also in the Drome.
Hey Niels , ik heb in juli 2020 3 keer vanuit Bourdeaux de col de la Chaudiere beklommen en boven was ik de 3de keer een prof uit Zuid-Amerika tegen gekomen en hij zij me ook dat er vanuit Saillans enkele vrij steile stukken in zaten van meer dan 10％ en hij vanuit Saillans ook zwaarder was ( ook meer hoogtemeters , 770 tegenover 647 ). Maar een prachtige omgeving om te fietsen . Dit jaar, als corona het toelaat, ga ik fietsen in de streek rond Sahune en blijkbaar nog een mooiere omgeving dan rond Bourdeaux en tevens ook in de Drome.

My first Col. I have cycled before in southern Limburg and around Liege. I cycled up it with a mountain bike and that went well. Started from Saillans. Beautiful surroundings, good road surface and no extreme percentages. Because of the heat it is wise to take enough water with you.
Mijn eerste Col. Wel al vaker in zuid Limburg en rondom Luik gefietst. Ik ben er met een mountainbike tegenop gefietst en dat ging prima. Gestart vanaf Saillans. Mooie omgeving, goed wegdek en geen extreme percentages. Vanwege de warmte is het wel verstandig om voldoende water mee te nemen.
I climbed this col on the same day from both sides on my /santos touring bike. It went very well. Warm, but if you can handle it, it is not so bad. View is great. in descent a bit of caution, because road surface is not super. Highly recommended. If you at the foot of the mountain, in Saillans, sharp right turn the D776 on you come in Chastel Arnoud. Beautiful whole village with clear (potable) water from the source. There is also a good restaurant. So.....
Ik heb deze col op dezelfde dag van beide kanten beklommen op mijn /santos tourfiets. Ging erg lekker. Wel warm, maar als je daar tegen kan dan valt het wel mee. Uitzicht geweldig. bij afdaling wel een beetje oppassen, want wegdek is niet super. Wel een aanrader. Als je aan de voet van de berg, in Saillans, scherp rechts gaat de D776 op kom je in Chastel Arnoud. Prachtig heel dorpje met helder (potable) water uit de bron. Er is ook een goed restaurant. Dus.....
Very nice climb, but because of the heat during the day quite heavy. I have climbed it 3 times now and once from Bourdeaux, very nice, fantastic nature and good road with little traffic. Also recommended and even quieter: col de penne beautiful nature and super quiet.
Erg leuke klim, maar door de warmte overdag best zwaar. Heb hem nu 3 keer beklommen en 1 keer vanuit Bourdeaux, erg mooi, fantastische natuur en goed wegdek met weinig verkeer. Ook aan te raden en nog rustiger: col de penne schitterende natuur en super rustig.
