The devil is in the detail. After a nice run through the valley, the climb starts immediately with percentages up to 14%. Fortunately, the first half is in a forest so there was shade. Later, the landscape becomes more barren and the shade more sparse. The views are magnificent, but the heat really kicks in here. The devil is in the detail. After a nice run through the valley, the climb starts immediately with percentages up to 14%. Fortunately, the first half is in a forest so there was shade. Later, the landscape becomes more barren and the shade more sparse. The views are magnificent, but the heat really kicks in here. I climbed this climb on a hot day, both my water bottles were empty afterwards. Fortunately, a few kilometres after the pass, there is a restaurant where you can eat a baguette and refill your water bottles. Immediately after the restaurant, I turned left up the Iraty, which is not as hard but gives you a magnificent view of the high Pyrenees.

Like the hills in this region, the climb up this pass is very intense. Personally, I did it when it was hot and humid and I had to empty my two water bottles during the climb.

Otherwise, the panorama is sensational despite the pain in my legs, and the climb to the Iraty pass is a wonderful day of cycling to do... weather permitting.

The road is in good condition, and the traffic is low.
