The climb starts 1.5km from the summit and you need to be on your toes. Beautiful scenery at the summit, the climb sheltered by the trees. Perfect surface
A very simple climb at the start, around the Banyuls vineyards. Very bucolic then the last 1500m are extremely difficult and steep.
Nice climb if you're in the area. Great (un-French) road surface, especially in the last steep section. You can dive into Spain at the top. Careful on descents, couldn't hold a corner myself. Very steep in some sections
Very nice climb with a very, very steep finish!
The road is now closed for traffic at the border (top of the climb by the Col sign) but passable by bike. This means that the climb is very quiet 😀 and the descent on the Spanish side is fabulous with no traffic and a great road surface.
If you are in the area, do it - the last part is very steep (18) - or continue on to Spain via the old road.
Possibly also MTB routes.
During my bicycle trip to Spain with my bike and trailer, I wanted to take the coastal road from Banyuls sur Mer to the Spanish border. The locals advised against this (dangerous for traffic), so I took the Col de Banyuls in the direction of Espolla. The first 7 km could be called touristy: along a small river through beautiful vineyards. The last 2.3 km were for me a horror with all that luggage: zigzagging up and stopping regularly to get my heart rate back to acceptable levels. Rarely had such a satisfied feeling on a "top".
First 7 km not really a climb but through a beautiful valley with vineyards. Last 2 km on the other hand very spicy.
Laatste 2 km daarentegen zeer pittig.
