Of the three routes up the Col d’Aubisque, this is my favourite. You start the climb from a narrow valley with little traffic. From the little church at Ferrières, the climb really begins. At first, you’re still somewhat sheltered, but at a certain point you ride between a few rocks and are treated to a sweeping view of the route up to the Col d’Aubisque. After the Soulor, there’s a short descent, followed by a beautiful mountain road leading up to the Col d’Aubisque.
Van de drie kanten hoe je de Col d'Aubisque op kan rijden is dit mijn favoriet. Je begint vanuit een smal dal met weinig verkeer aan de klim. Vanaf het kerkje bij Ferrières begin je echt aan de klim. In het begin rijdt je nog een beetje beschut, maar op een gegeven moment rijdt je tussen een paar rotsen rotsen door een heb je een weids uitzicht op de route naar de Col d'Aubisque. Na de Soulor is er een kleine afdaling en heb je een prachtige bergweg naar de Col d'Aubisque.
Perhaps the most beautiful climb we did in our holidays in the Pyrenees. There is very little traffic on this climb, even in the middle of high season. And although the last 12 kilometres of the Soulor are steep, nowhere does it really get very difficult. On top of the Soulor, don't forget to cycle 30 metres to the left to really take in the summit! On the Soulor we drank a cold coke and ate a waffle (cash only because of poor internet coverage) before doing the Aubisque. The profile doesn't seem very difficult but there are still a few dirty bits in that climb. From the Aubisque we descended towards Laruns and via the valley back to Arthez d'Asson. A beautiful lap of just under 90km.
Misschien wel de mooiste klim die we in onze vakantie in de Pyreneeën gedaan hebben. Er is weinig verkeer op deze klim, zelfs midden in het hoogseizoen niet. En hoewel de laatste 12 kilometer van de Soulor steil zijn, wordt het nergens echt heel moeilijk. Vergeet bovenop de Soulor niet even 30 meter naar links te fietsen om ook echt de top even mee te pakken! Op de Soulor hebben we een koude cola gedronken en een wafel gegeten (cash only want heel slecht internet bereik) waarna we de Aubisque gedaan hebben. Vergeet niet te genieten van het prachtige uitzicht vanaf het cirque du litor, je ziet een heel groot deel van de klim die je net gedaan hebt liggen. Het profiel lijkt niet heel moeilijk maar er zitten toch een paar vieze stukken in die klim. Vanaf de Aubisque afdalen richting Laruns en via de vallei terug naar Arthez d'Asson. Een prachtige ronde van net geen 90km.

The real climb starts when you leave Ferrieres, a steady climb that keeps going up continuously.
At some point you get to see the beautiful wide mountain scenery with the Soulor and the Aubisque.
Because of the beauty of the scenery, this one alone is worthwhile.
From the Aubisque the descent to Laruns, good road surface, lovely stretches of tarmac and turns, really enjoyable.

Het eerste stuk van Arthez naar Ferrieres loopt door een prachtige smalle vallei.
De echte klim begint als je Ferrieres uitrijdt, een gelijkmatige klim, die continue omhoog blijft lopen.
Op een gegeven moment krijg je het prachtige weidse berglandschap in beeld met de Soulor en de Aubisque.
Vanwege de schoonheid van de omgeving is deze route alleen al de moeite waard.
Vanaf de Aubisque de afdaling naar Laruns, goed wegdek, heerlijke stukken asfalt en bochten, echt genieten.
