The road is wide open and there are no problems. It's a very nice climb with very little traffic, there are some great viewpoints and the gradients are accessible.

For some reason, this page states the D81 is closed - it is not. I didn't take any chances and took the alternative via Les Karelis, but I descended without problem over the D81 back into the valley.

We rode up this climb on the first day of our cycling holiday in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
The climb has some tough parts. Once after the exit D81 (after the village of Montricher-Albanne) the road goes through the forest, where the tarmac gets a bit rougher, but not really disturbing. For the descent, we chose to descend via Les Karellis (D81B). Because you drive up the climb via the D81 and descend partly via the D81B, you still have the feeling that you have made a "loop".
