A demanding climb, you immediately reach high gradients and the 100m at 20% appears like a real wall. It's clearly advisable to have a suitable mechanical (it wasn't easy with my Claris 2x8 speed, 50/34 at the front, 11-32 at the rear...).
The tarmac is in decent condition, but it deteriorates as you go along the route (which starts to descend a little once you reach the summit).
If you decide to turn back, be careful on the descent, as you pick up speed very quickly; what's more, it ends with a 90° bend. In wet weather, I think it's much better to descend on foot (as I did).

Note that the ascent is one-way. There's very little traffic as you pass under the railway line and enter the forest (very few dwellings for 1km), but be careful.
It's the 5th steepest climb in the PACA region, so it's well worth the diversions, but note that there's little change in altitude in the surrounding area.
