Most cyclists heading towards Hergenrath from Kelmis will do so via the descent of Maxstrasse and the climb of Altenberger Strasse. This relatively unknown "indoor" two-stage climb on the south side of Kelmis is more than worthwhile. Coming from the direction of Henri-Chapelle, you enter Kelmis via the Lütticher Strasse. The climb starts at the former petrol station on the right side of the road. Near the Aldi, turn right into the one-way street. There is a dead end sign but cyclists and pedestrians have free passage. The climb then continues until the first side road on the left. After this you descend and turn right at the T-junction. The second part of the climb starts on the small bridge over the Tuljebach. After the bridge, the gradient rises sharply and you have to work hard to cycle up. After the long left turn, it levels off again until the T-junction with Altenberger Strasse. At the T-junction you can then continue the climb towards Hergenrath.
