The Cueva de Agua pass is another of La Palma's "insider tips". The climb is 11.30 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 7.1 percent. Almost exactly 800 metres in altitude are climbed here.
The start of the pass begins 3 kilometres after the coastal town of Santo Domingo, coming from the main road LP-114, and is unfortunately easy to miss. Only a sign reading "Cueva de Agua" shows you the way to the small pass road. Here, too, you will have little chance of meeting any cars. The road is almost completely resurfaced. There is only one short section, which is about 300 metres long, where you'll hop over a concrete pavement.
The typical La Palma scenery is on offer here. You drive past old lava scree and through beautiful pine forests, which smell so wonderful when the warm sun shines on them.
Once you reach the top, you will find yourself at a monument and a barbecue area. You will also meet up with the main LP-1 road again here, making this pass a wonderful alternative route.
