This is one of the very hardest climbs I have been up (I've done well over 2000 with 100m+ elevation). I like steep climbs but I fear this one so much I have only done it three times in ten years, even though not far from where I live. Those first really steep 400 metres are on an obscure tarmac road linking the A419 road in the valley to the village of Brownshill. Nobody drives this short cut, as a much easier road links the top, just to the east. It is also very easy to miss the awkward junction from the A419: it is not very obvious and is on a dangerous blind bend on the A road. I therefore doubt many people even know this road exists. As you might expect, the tarmac is in poor condition: many potholes, loose gravel, and because wooded always tree litter. This makes traction an issue (especially on my 30x29 gear and 25c tyres). One time I failed due to this, so swept the road with a branch (nobody saw thankfully!) then tried again and succeeded. The very steepest part is before rejoining the main route up to Brownshill, and must touch 30% at least for a short while. Ouch... each time I did it I vowed never again! The remaining climb to the village would feel easier if you weren't still recovering from the terrible bit.
