If you are cycling in the area, you can see the basilica from afar. First part is along a busy brick road (Diest - Scherpenheuvel). You do ride on a very good cycle path. Climb starts just after a carnival shop. Piece of false flat, but found it tricky as I had a headwind. Then a turn to the right, the nicest and steepest part. I did a sprint up, but had to swerve to the pavement as several cars'd stopped there in the middle of the lane. The section is not too steep at all and you can ... read more

Piece of false flat, but found it tricky as I had a headwind.

Then a turn to the right, the nicest and steepest part. I did a sprint up, but had to swerve to the pavement as several cars'd stopped there in the middle of the lane. The section is not too steep at all and you can easily keep up the effort until the top.
The last part you have to watch out for cars and pedestrians, because then you are at the place of pilgrimage.

Nice steep section, just a pity it is so crowded.
