Only interesting because at the top you have a nice view of the Balenberg. An additional advantage is that you then arrive at the Sven Nys cycling centre where it is always nice to hang out.
Enkel interessant aangezien je op de top een mooi vergezicht hebt op de Balenberg. Bijkomend voordeel is dat je dan aankomt op het Sven Nys cyclingcenter waar het steeds leuk vertoeven is.
Beneath the church tower lies the Moorsemsestraat, which takes you to Baal's highest point: the Balenberg. There is no need to light a candle, because actually the Balenberg should have been called Balendwerg.... Through a piece of false flat - which you can only judge as annoying if you are completely destroyed and hear on a blue Monday that your pet has exploded and your car has been run over - you make a few altitude meters, before taking a sharp left turn. The last meters bring you to the foot of the Sven Nys Cycling Center, where every year on New Years day the GP Sven Nys Cyclocross is ridden. This is also the start and finish of the Sven Nys Cycling Route: a 91,5 km ride through the Hageland with 765 altitude meters.
As a base for the Sven Nys Cycling Route this "climb" is ideal. For those who want to make the few altimeters followed by a fresh beer, the Balenberg is even worth the detour.
For all others: the Hageland has better things to offer. Nice if you're in the neighbourhood, to be avoided if you don't have to be there.
Onder de kerktoren van Baal ligt de Moorsemsestraat, die je richting Baals hoogste punt brengt: de Balenberg. Je hoeft absoluut geen kaarsje te branden, want eigenlijk had de Balenberg beter "Balendwerg" geheten.... Via een stuk vals plat - hetgeen je hoogstens als "vervelend" kunt beoordelen indien je compleet stukgereden op een blauwe maandag te horen krijgt dat je huisdier ontploft is en dat je auto overreden is - maak je enkele hoogtemeters, alvorens een scherpe linkse hoek te nemen. De laatste meters brengen je naar het Sven Nys Cycling Center, alwaar jaarlijks op Nieuwjaarsdag de GP Sven Nys Cyclocross wordt gereden. Tevens is dit ook het start- en eindpunt van de Sven Nys Cycling Route: 91.5 km rijden doorheen het Hageland met 765 hoogtemeters.
Als uitvalsbasis voor de Sven Nys Cycling Route is deze "klim" ideaal. Voor diegenen die in de buurt de weinige hoogtemeters willen maken gevolgd door een frisse pint, is de Balenberg zelfs de omweg waard.
Voor alle anderen: het Hageland heeft beters te bieden. Leuk als je in de buurt bent, te mijden als je er niet moet zijn.
This climb is actually not much but is of course very famous for the annual cyclocross that takes place around the Balenberg on New Year's Day. The cycling center of Sven Nys is also located on the Balenberg. The climb itself is a 1 km long quiet approach in the Moorsemsestraat and then you have to go left (Balenbergstraatje) on the real Balenberg which is a bit harder but certainly not steep or painful. You can also just further left. I have given it 3 stars because of the Balenbergstraatje otherwise it would be less.
Deze beklimming stelt eigenlijk weinig voor maar is natuurlijk zeer bekend vanwege de jaarlijkse veldrit die om en rond de Balenberg plaats vindt op nieuwjaarsdag. Ook het cyclingcenter van Sven Nys is op de Balenberg gelegen. De klim zelf is een 1 km lange rustige aanloop in de Moorsemsestraat en dan moet je links ( balenbergstraatje ) op de echte Balenberg die wat harder oploopt maar zeker niet steil of pijn doet. Je kan ook even verder links op. Ik heb het 3 sterren gegeven vanwege het Balenbergstraatje want anders zou het minder zijn.
