My tour towards Murcia normally goes via the Cabezo de la Plata and then back via the Colombares, descending to Los Garres where the start of this climb is located. A friend of mine said it would be a nice bonus to the other climbs. This is real Valverde territory and although the climbs are not long, none of them are really flat and the percentages can rise quickly. The climb is in a nature reserve and at the weekend there are many MTB'ers on the road. Most of the riders you will meet are local people enjoying the scenery. The ride goes through low forest and occasionally you can look down nicely. The road surface is not the smooth type of tarmac, more the rough, uneven type that you sometimes encounter in Belgium. What I like most is the peace and quiet around you, entire stretches where you hear nothing but your breathing and the humming of the spokes. You can enjoy it here despite the high temperatures so you sweat a lot.

Also along this road, the alto de la cresto del gallo is a beautiful climb and ideal for the average cyclist who likes a col which is not too long or too steep. The road is not so inviting the first km but once you enter the open forest it is a beautiful climb and environment. The hardest part is in the middle with a 13 km section but after that, the legs can catch their breath. But also along this side the road surface is quite rough which has to do with the heat in June and July and even August.
This is an oasis of peace and quiet in a densely populated area.
