4.0 by Pedro_delbThe main road in this area goes through a tunnel leaving the original route very quiet and higher up empty. It must be very rare for the tunnel to be closed as it is a big road with many lorries. In my ascent & descent I was passed by 3 vehicles only. Scenery is great with beech tree forests lower down. This is a very pretty road, winding its way through good mountain and forest scenery, and photogenic villages like those to be found in the Baztan valley.
As for the traffic, in principle most of it goes through the Belate tunnel. This is because it was undergoing work until recently, and was therefore closed, so the (fairly huge) flow of traffic was redirected to this pass. The work is now apparently complete, although it's best to find out before setting off by bike up the pass.
Don't!
Maybe because the autovia was closed but not a fun climb. No room for cyclists on the hard shoulder and lots of trucks.
