Traffic-free route beyond a 5-bar gate, but not for the faint-hearted. I've done a lot of steep climbs, but the first half of this must rank among the hardest challenges I've done. Dead straight line makes it worse? My legs continued to ache for the of the day, despite only doing a short ride. The summit view is absolutely gorgeous, over rolling hills of Shropshire.
You'll have to hop over a farm gate to access this climb. The first few hundred metres are on a dead straight, relentlessly steep concrete ramp, and there's little do but (metaphorically) bite the bars and push the pedals. This is as much a mental battle as a physical one, and neither are easy. After a cattle grid the gradient ease and the road wends round to the trig point on Brown Clee. Watch out for sheep (and good luck avoiding their droppings).
