Did it on the Sellaronda bike day in September 2024 - quite beautiful ride. I started from Wolkenstein and the last ride up to Grödner Joch was the hardest for me.
Upside doing it on Sellaronda bike day - no motorcycles or cars. Downside there are a lot of cyclists.
This is a great circle to do. It is quite a lot of climbing in a short period of time but with great roads and views. The downside for us was how crowded it was with cars / motorbikes in July. This really lead to dangerous situations in downhills when for example motorcycles don't stay in their own lane. Therefore, it might be better to not do the route in July / August.
What a cool round to cycle! Beautiful views and not too difficult passes. The combination of passes does make it increasingly tough to get to the top, but the views make it worth it! I cycled the lap counter-clockwise, starting from Plan de Gralba. Between Canazei and a little after Arabba I experienced less traffic, on the remaining route there are still mostly bikers who don't hold back. The road surface is generally fine, especially between Passo Gardena and Plan de Gralba I found it bad.
Easily the most beautiful lap on two wheels. We cycled 'm during the Sella Ronda Bike Day: twice a year on a Saturday in June and September, only cycling is allowed on the four passes between 0830-1500, no registration necessary. You cycle up with everything: e-fully's, old tanned men on ancient bikes with ancient gears (some overtake you, some almost park), people with a loudspeaker in their backpack for some music, we even saw bike trailers and a child's seat on the back. You do have to cycle anti-clockwise on that day, but that still makes it spectacular, especially on the Sella and the Gardena. We will go again next year.
We gaan volgend jaar weer.
One of my absolute favourites in the mountains, both clockwise and anti-clockwise. In clockwise direction, you have the long climb of the Pordoi from Arabba, and the steep side of the Sella. But the most beautiful panorama's on your way to the Sella. In the opposite direction, I find it slightly less heavy, more runners. But remains really enjoy in both directions from beginning to end.
If you go on busier days, best leave on time, or just wait until late afternoon, because for many motorbikes and fast cars is this also a beloved round.
Once or twice a year the Sella Ronda bike day is organised, where the route is made traffic-free. We were lucky enough to be in the neighbourhood and to be able to do the (free) counterclockwise tour in beautiful weather. The setting of the Dolomites is magnificent, the slopes are not too steep (the Pordoio is shorter than shown above) and the descents are all different and beautiful. Highly recommended!
According to many the most beautiful lap on two wheels. I am inclined to believe this. Last summer I cycled this tour from Arabba, where you immediately the fantastic Passo Pordoi with numerous hairpin bends on. In a truly stunning setting you then Passo Sella and Passo Gardena on. Ideal to warm up during a multi-day visit to the beautiful Dolomites.
Beautiful tour, challenging passes but never too hard
Giro bellissimo, passi impegnativi ma mai troppo duri
Just done anti-clockwise from Corvara. It is a truly beautiful tour. The four climbs have wonderful views and accessible gradients in common, but quite different characteristics.
Starting from Corvara, you attack the eastern side of the Gardena Pass. I started around ten o'clock in the morning and pedalled constantly through traffic, both cars and motorbikes. In the last few hairpin bends there are a few slightly tricky gradients, but overall it was not a difficult climb.
After the descent to Plan de Gralba (interrupted by roadworks with alternating one-way streets), the fabulous Passo Sella is attacked. For me, it is the most beautiful climb of the four. Good asphalt, especially at the bottom, and a wonderful finish with high mountain scenery. A bit of wind on some of the long central straights, but overall no extra difficulty with the smooth, accessible gradient.
The descent towards Canazei is another highlight of the route. The upper part is very steep, and you can tell that these hairpin bends made in reverse can be very hard. After a few kilometres you finally come to a beautiful forest, and at the junction with the road coming from Canazei you finally climb the famous Pordoi.
Finally some shade for a climb that is not very hard but not easy either. Fatigue begins to make itself felt and although reduced to only six kilometres, it is still a ramp to be respected.
The summit is far too crowded, and after visiting the monument to the great Fausto Coppi, we cannot wait to begin the fascinating descent, full of bends but with good asphalt.
Once in Arabba, the four kilometres of the Campolongo are missing, which I honestly rode quite quickly due to the easy gradient and the desire to get home. The subsequent descent towards Corvara is perhaps the fastest of the four: good gradients, excellent visibility, and straight stretches as far as the eye can see allow high speeds without too many risks.
I would say that the Sellaronda in the anti-clockwise version is really worth it. Everything is magnificent, but the two sides of the Sella and the descent to Corvara deserve an extra mark.
Beautiful tour, breathtaking views enjoyed while crossing the passes that have written the history of cycling and the Giro d'Italia. Recommended for all mountain lovers with good preparation.
Sellaronda, with roads closed to traffic The best route a cyclist can take to see the views of the Dolomites
